Click-to-WhatsApp ads vs WhatsApp Status ads

They're both called 'WhatsApp ads' but they do different jobs. Here's what Click-to-WhatsApp ads and WhatsApp Status ads each do, and how to use them together.

Last verified 12 Sept 2026

“WhatsApp ads” gets used for two products that work quite differently. Running the right one for the right goal matters, so this guide lays out what each is, where it appears, and how they fit together. Facts here are checked against Meta’s own pages, linked below.

Click-to-WhatsApp ads: bringing people in

Click-to-WhatsApp ads run on Facebook and Instagram, Meta’s largest surfaces. Instead of sending a tap to a landing page, they open a WhatsApp chat with your business. That makes them a top-of-funnel tool: they reach new audiences who have never heard of you and pull them into a conversation, where a genuine reply does the persuading a static page cannot.

Because they run on Facebook and Instagram, they keep the full targeting available there — interests, behaviours, custom and lookalike audiences.

They also trigger the 72-hour free entry-point window: when someone messages you from the ad and you reply, your messages to that person are free for 72 hours (templates included). That is what makes ad-driven conversations cheaper to run than cold outreach — explained in the pricing guide.

WhatsApp Status ads: reaching people already inside WhatsApp

WhatsApp Status ads appear in the Updates tab — the part of WhatsApp that holds Status and Channels — as people view Status updates. Meta announced ads in Status in June 2025, and they have been rolling out by market since. They are a mid-to-lower-funnel tool: they reach an audience already inside WhatsApp and using it daily, which is a different, often warmer, moment than scrolling a social feed.

Meta also offers Promoted Channels, which lift a WhatsApp Channel’s visibility in the directory — useful when you are building an audience you can broadcast to later.

Meta’s June 2025 announcement covers the launch.

Targeting: an honest difference

This is the difference that most affects planning. Targeting for ads in the Updates tab uses a narrower set of signals — roughly your country or city, your language, the Channels you follow, and how you interact with ads — rather than the deep interest and behaviour targeting on Facebook and Instagram. Click-to-WhatsApp ads, running on those platforms, keep the fuller targeting.

So if precise prospecting matters, Click-to-WhatsApp is usually the stronger lever; Status ads are better read as broad, in-app reach. See Meta’s help page on ads in Status and Channels.

Privacy: what these ads do not touch

Worth knowing, and worth being able to tell your customers. As Meta states:

  • Ads appear only in the Updates tab, never in your personal chats.
  • Personal messages, calls and groups stay end-to-end encrypted and are not used to target ads.
  • Meta does not sell or share your phone number with advertisers.

A quick comparison

Click-to-WhatsApp ads WhatsApp Status ads
Where they run Facebook and Instagram WhatsApp Updates tab (Status)
Funnel position Top — reach new audiences Mid/lower — people already in WhatsApp
Targeting Full Facebook/Instagram targeting Narrower: location, language, channels followed, ad interaction
Opens 72-hour free window Yes, on reply No
Best for Prospecting into a conversation Broad, in-app awareness

Using them together

They are complements, not alternatives. A common pattern: Click-to-WhatsApp to prospect precisely and open free-window conversations, Status ads for broad reach among active WhatsApp users, and Promoted Channels to build an audience you can return to. Which mix is right depends on your goal and budget — which is the strategy part of WhatsApp ads management.
