Getting verified on WhatsApp Business

What Meta actually asks for to verify your business on WhatsApp, how long it realistically takes, and the mistakes that stall it — so you can plan around the wait.

Verification is the step that catches most businesses off guard — not because it is hard, but because it takes longer than people expect and sits entirely on Meta’s side. Knowing what to prepare and how long to allow removes almost all of the frustration. Here is what to expect. Requirements change by country and over time, so treat this as orientation and confirm specifics in Meta Business Manager.

What you actually need

Three things have to be in place:

  • A WhatsApp Business Account (WABA). This is the account inside Meta Business Manager that holds your number, templates and messaging. It is created in your business’s name.
  • Meta Business verification. Meta confirms your business is a real, legally registered entity. This is the step with the wait.
  • A dedicated phone number. A number not tied to any existing personal or WhatsApp Business app account, able to receive a verification code, that you intend to keep for the business.

Meta Business verification, step by step

The broad shape is consistent even where the details differ by country:

  1. Create or open your Meta Business Manager (Business Portfolio).
  2. Enter your business details — legal name, address, website, phone — exactly as they appear on official records.
  3. Submit business verification with the documents Meta requests (typically proof of registration and proof the business is yours).
  4. Wait for review, respond to any request for more information, and confirm control of the phone number.

The realistic timeline

Set the expectation up front: allow a few days to a couple of weeks. Some businesses are verified quickly; others wait longer, especially if Meta asks for additional documents. There is no way to pay to skip the queue, and no provider can make Meta review faster. The single best thing you can do is start early and get the documents right the first time.

What slows verification down

Most delays come from a small set of avoidable issues:

  • Mismatched details. The business name, address or website in Meta Business Manager not matching your official documents.
  • A number that is already in use. Trying to verify a number already registered to a personal WhatsApp or the WhatsApp Business app.
  • Incomplete or low-quality documents. Blurry scans, expired records, or a document that does not clearly show the legal entity.
  • A thin business footprint. No working website or public presence can make verification harder.

After verification

Once verified, you set a display name (subject to Meta’s approval), register your number, and create the message templates you will use. New templates go through their own approval, and their category — marketing, utility or authentication — affects what they cost, which is covered in the pricing guide.

Prefer not to do this yourself?

Verification and template approval are part of the setup we handle in WhatsApp alert routing and WhatsApp ads management. We prepare the paperwork, guide the review, and get your templates approved — you still own the account at the end of it.

Common questions

How long does WhatsApp Business verification take?
Plan for anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. Meta reviews business verification on its own timeline, and it can ask for additional documents, which extends things. It is rarely instant, so start early.
Can I use my personal WhatsApp number?
No. The WhatsApp Business Platform needs a dedicated phone number that is not already registered to a personal or WhatsApp Business app account. Choose a number you can keep and receive a verification code on.
What documents does Meta ask for?
Meta verifies the legal existence of your business, typically through official registration documents and evidence that the business is yours — the exact list depends on your country. Having accurate, matching business details ready before you start avoids most delays.
